10 Tips On Getting More Out Of A Seminar

November 29th, 2006

Copyright (C) Roger Loh

The purpose of this article is to highlight some tips that can help you get more mileage when you attend a seminar.

With careful preparation and planning, you can get more out of a seminar than simply attending passively.

I recently attended the World Internet Seminar in Singapore, 2006 and learnt more effectively through proper preparation which I like to share with you.

Tip #1: What’s your purpose?

Are you going to the seminar just because your boss assigns you?  Or because someone passed you a free ticket?  It’s good to think about what exactly you want out of the seminar in advance.  Is it to gain knowledge?  Is it to meet more like-minded people?  Write down your goals before even setting off for the seminar.

Tip #2: Business Cards

This is especially appropriate if you are doing a few things.  For example, if you are a engineer full time and a dog trainer part time and going to attend a seminar on pets.  Would you simply give out your ‘engineer’ business cards?  If I were you, I would design and print some cards to tell the world that I am into dog training.

Tip #3: Prepare yourself

Spend some time reading about the subject just before the seminar and list down some questions before the event. That way, you will be more attentive, and absorb more and will be able to ask the speakers the right questions.

Tip #4: Bring all-weather gear

In big rooms, it can be difficult to maintain the right temperature and humidity.  Rather than shaking all over to fight the cold if the temperature is too low, it is smarter to pull out a jacket from you bag and slip it over.

Tip #5: Network for business

Do not waste the opportunity to find some prospects, customers or even partners for your business.  Set a mental goal of how many people you want to meet.  After all, you’re there with all the like-minded people.  Ask how can you help each other and make a point to follow up with at least a email or phone call after the seminar.

Tip #6: Make new friends

Apart from just networking for business, it’s also a good opportunity to make new friends.  Who knows, you can become close friends or even business associates or partners in the longer term.

Just don’t tell your whole life story upon meeting a new person!

Again, make a point to follow up with at least a email or phone call after the seminar.

Tip #7: Participation

If the situation permits, make a point to ask some questions or even volunteer in some activities, especially if you’re participating in small group activities.  That way, you will fully immerse yourself and learn more just be interacting with the speakers or other participants.

Tip #8: Create blog posts

Before, during and after the seminar, you can post short articles in your blog to keep your blog readers updated on the progress of the event.  That way, you continue to build a better relationship by providing good value to your readers and/or subscribers to your mailing list.

Tip #9: Review of notes

Usually, there are lots of new information disseminated during a seminar.  That leads to two things: overload and confusion.  Take a day or so to relax and thereafter, review the notes you have taken at the seminar as by then, you would have forgot most of what you heard.  In other words, take time and effort to revise the material, especially the topics you want to apply.

Tip #10: Write Articles

If possible, write short articles on certain topics that are of value to yourself and give to others.  By giving to others, you are adding value to your friends, business associates or subscribers to your mailing lists.

Money Myths That Paralyze Us

November 23rd, 2006

Copyright (C) Roger Loh

Singapore - Recently, a friend shared with me an article from our local newspaper on money myths that paralyze us.

I found it very enlightening and like to share it briefly, with some of my own examples, with my friends…

Here goes. . .

Myth: I hate my job, but I can’t quit as I need the money!

Fact: What kind of money could you earn when you turn your passion into pension? J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter’s fame is a good example of achieving wealth by putting pen to paper!

Myth: Having wealth makes me greedy!

Fact: A knife can be used to cut an apple or to kill. Likewise, wealth can be used for good or evil.

Myth: I need to study business to be wealthy!

Fact: Carly Fiorina majored in medieval history and philosophy, dropped out of Law school to be a salesman in AT & T. She later rose to become chairman and CEO of HP.

Myth: I don’t have enough education to become wealthy.

Fact: Persistence is the key! Colonel Sanders, a retiree, showed his recipe to more than a thousand people before being accepted and now, KFC is dotted around the globe!

Duplicaton Is *NOT* Equal To Sponsoring!

September 22nd, 2006

Copyright (C) Roger Loh

Isn’t that common sense?

Straightforward as it may be, it’s strange that many newbies or even some seasoned veterans in network marketing still don’t get it.

In his book, “45 Seconds Presentation That Will Change Your Life”, network marketing guru, Don Failla talked about the “Salesmen Failure Syndrome” where the salesman type comes into the business, and starts sponsoring lots of new distributors.

The gist is this:  Those that this “salesman” sponsored simply think that they can’t do what this “salesman” does and thus give up early in their network marketing journey.  Check this out at:

http://the-elearning.biz/index.php/books-network-marketing/

That’s right!

DUPLICATION IS NOT EQUAL TO SPONSORING!

In fact, this is the formula:

DUPLICATION = SPONSORING + TRAINING + COACHING + COUNSELING + STRATEGIZING + …

where…

TRAINING = Teaching of network marketing basics, mindset, skills, etc

COACHING = Helping them to achieve performance, not fault finding

COUNSELING = Listening to their problems and offering another perspective to help them find solutions

STRATEGIZING = Discussing and working out concrete strategies and plans to build their networks

Frankly, I hope I did not frighten you off :-)

*** WHAT IS EXPECTED WHEN YOU GET INTO A JOB? ***

That’s what duplication is about.  Sponsoring is merely the beginning of a new relationship with a business partner.  Network marketing is, after all, a serious business.  If not, how can you retire with your millions in a few short years?

I suspect most of you held a job before.  I did.  (The one that stands for “Just Over Broke”, “Just Obey Boss”, etc)

Can you remember your first day at work?

After you left school and passed that job interview with flying colors, you happily report to work.  And what happened after that?

The fortunate ones will go through a process similar to this:

- Get introduced to the colleagues in the company

- Get familiarized to the products or services the company offer

- Get acquainted to the operation of the company

- Get hold of all the information you can get - files, folders - and learn as much as you can

- Get to attend orientation training by some senior or HR staff

- Get used to how your boss works

- Get close to some colleagues with ‘chemistry’ to become your buddies

- Get some coaching from the closer colleagues, perhaps those who care for you

- Get a job confirmation - FINALLY - after a few months (or even 2 years in my case!)

- Get a pay raise after a year (or even after many years if not at all)

- Get a job promotion (if you fight hard enough at politicking or back biting!)

Be honest, my friend…  Does this sound real or did I make this up?

The key here is: when we land ourselves in a job, we learn along the way as we work and progress.  After some years, we become more senior and then it’s time to guide the junior colleagues, especially those who just join the company.

Now…let’s switch back to the network marketing scenario…

*** WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTED TO DUPLICATE? ***

After you sponsored a new business partner, what should you do?

Yes, DUPLICATION, of course!

But then, what is DUPLICATION?  What is expected of you to duplicate?

Here’s the scoop:

Network marketing is a business, essentially a people’s business.  So, your success does not depend solely on your ability to sell but rather on your willingness to help others by developing people.

Duplication of skills, attitudes, mindsets, beliefs, commitment… and taking the effort to DEVELOP PEOPLE is extremely important.  Once you are able to develop some leaders, that’s where your EXPONENTIAL GROWTH will kick in due to *LEVERAGE*, (which to me, is the 2nd most important word in network marketing.)

Thus, I always remind my new distributors that network marketing is NOT sales!  And when I told them that they have to train their new distributors, they often froze in their tracks and they would say that don’t know how to train.  I will tell them that in the land of the blind, the ‘one-eyed’ is king!

*** WHAT IS NETWORK MARKETING? ***

Network marketing, though already more than 50 years old, is still a paradigm shift for many people.  There is indeed a shift in the way goods and services are distributed.  A DISTRIBUTION REVOLUTION is going on, in fact, where a lot of money can be made!! It’s already a multi-billion dollar industry and many big multinational corporations (MNC’s) are already adopting network marketing in part to distribute their goods and services.

Thus, it is important for us to shift the paradigm of our distributors…  How?

What we really need to do is to train our people, not just in skills but WHY Network Marketing, Why are they doing it?  It is a *PROPER* business because word of mouth advertising has proved to be an extremely effective method of distribution, NOT a get rich quick scheme.

In conclusion, if you ask me to say which is the MOST IMPORTANT WORD in network marketing, I would say, without a doubt:

D-U-P-L-I-C-A-T-I-O-N

Home Based Business For Under $100 To Start Up

September 16th, 2006

Copyright (C) Jaz Lai

Do you know how many people in the United States are considering starting a home based business? The Harris Poll states that 72% of all adults are seeking business opportunities so that they can quit their jobs and work on their own.

How many people are actually skilled enough to run a business? The primary prerequisites for setting up of a business are - an office, a few products, a platform to sell the products, a good sales pitch, marketing skills, lots of leads and some sort of support system. Not many people have that many resources or even the basic training required for starting a business.

One of the easiest low capital business opportunities that requires very little or no knowledge or skill is Multi Level Marketing (MLM) or network marketing.
MLM is not a new concept but the internet has truly revolutionized it. It has helped many individuals over the years to change from timid introverts to outspoken, confident salespersons and successful business owners.

MLM can prove to be a disappointment if a person does not understand how it actually functions. Many people get their first exposure to MLM when they are obliging someone and helping them out with their MLM business opportunity. What people do not realize is that even a tiny participation in the MLM business means you are part of it and with a bit of work you can build it into a serious income over the course of a few years.

When MLM companies first started on the Internet, they helped many people succeed very fast because those people had a strong team of affiliates working for them. At the same time, there were many people who could never understand how to make money with an MLM home based business.

A home based business that needs only an Internet connection to run is a good business for you to own. The startup cost is low, no inventories to maintain and so on. This means that the risk involved is very low. This can lead to a lack of commitment since it costs very little, so people do not take it seriously. You can join a MLM program and spend months with nothing happening. At this point, most people decide to quit and start looking for some other program or, even worse, some people will simply give up on trying to make money on the Internet.

This is where the ‘marketing’ line of thought makes a difference. People who meet sales deadlines do not succeed immediately. They do not have any magic bullets. They simply work hard with a lot of perseverance.

The important point is that an Internet based business can earn you a very decent income, just like a regular business. You have to work hard in your home based business just as you would in a regular business. Making money on the Internet is no easier than making money in the conventional way. The harder you work, the better your chance of financial success. The basic difference between an internet business and a regular business is that, in online business, you have a lower risk involved as it is very possible to set up a home based for under $100 start up cost. And for only under $100, you can start your own business that would have the potential to generate solid returns much more than your full time job.

Let’s Get Started Making Money!

Two of the biggest challenges that MLM distributors face are understanding HOW to build an MLM business fast and effectively . . . and then actually being able to do it! Lots of books and tapes are available on this very subject. If you’ve looked at many of these materials, you might be more confused than ever, so I thought it would be useful to re-visit some of these concepts with you — I say, “revisit” because I am assuming that you have already been presented with a model of how to build an MLM organization.

Some time ago, I interviewed a master recruiter in MLM named Kelly Schnorenberg. Kelly is a no-nonsense kind of a guy, who is industry-renowned for “bringing home the bacon.” “I keep it real simple”¨ he said. “I do three way calling with my new recruit, quickly working through the names list that he puts together his first day in the business.¨

“The purpose of the first 3-way call is to take the prospect’s initial temperature. After a brief conversation, I ask the prospect, ‘If I could show you a way to make a full-time income on a part-time basis during your first 30 days in the business, an income that would not interfere with your current source of income, on a scale of 1-10, what would your level of interest be?’”

Kelly, being an excellent sifter of people, simply thanks them for their time if they are a “3″ or less. If the prospect indicates openness to an opportunity, then Kelly follows with a fax and a firm time to check back for a clarification. Then the prospect is 3-wayed into a bridge call with dozens, if not hundreds, of other prospects to hear the “Live Guest Presentation Call.”

As soon as the presentation call ends, Kelly calls the prospect back, and it’s decision time. As you follow this, you realize the immediacy of this system — fast and effective. It’s definitely a winning formula for people who want to create a full-time big-time income.

As I have looked at, and worked with, this system myself, I am delighted by several benefits included its main features. The system actually accomplishes four things: it creates credibility; it is fantastic training for the new person; it will grow a business rapidly (at least 2 out of 10 will do the business on average); and it shows the new person that he doesn’t have to be a salesperson. The new recruit does not need talent (yet) or a complete understanding of anything — neither the product knowledge nor the five points of the comp plan. The new recruit also need not have supreme confidence in himself or his abilities.

Here’s really all he or she DOES need:

A phone with 3 way calling features; A sponsor or upline person willing and able to “buddy up¨ on those 3-way calls; Access to a fax machine; A bridge live-call system with effective “Live Guest Presentations” held frequently enough to service the “Access to training which can take the recruits to the next level;” An effective website from which forms can be printed and details about the program can be reviewed; A list of warm bodies with some potential to be attracted to the program.

I need to add that, for some part-time MLMers who want to proceed slowly with an emphasis on product-consumption, (we generally refer to this system as “Retail to Sponsor”) participation in the 3-way-calling system would probably require more commitment than they would be willing to make. In this case, what I like to remind people is: “Different strokes for different folks.” Some people aren’t really committed enough to their businesses to work their schedules around multiple phone calls per day. Since we are all free agents, it’s OKAY to get rich quickly or slowly (or for that matter, not to get rich at all).

I’d like to offer up a few additional considerations that would be very helpful if you’d like to simplify your approach and plug in to this no-fail system:

1. Choose your sponsor carefully, for obvious reasons;

2. Budget some phone money;

3. Get organized and get an organizer;

4. Re-evaluate your current schedule, and free up some time if necessary;

5. Eat right, sleep right, and be healthy (you’ll have better phone energy);

6. Put a mirror in front of your phone station, and look cheerful;

7. Be positive, and don’t take any rejection personally;

8. Put your dreams list together, and think BIG.

I am so proud to be part of this industry, because I truly believe it is the only business which offers the brass ring equally to everyone who has the desire and intent to be successful. Good luck in getting started — whether you’re starting from scratch — or starting on your next million!

Make No Mistake About It…Network Marketing Is A Business!

August 6th, 2006

Copyright (C) Roger Loh
How fast your network marketing business grows depends a lot on how serious you see it as a business.

If you were to start a traditional business with a capital of say, US$100,000, what would you do?

You would indeed invest a lot of time and effort just to get it started.  Drawing on my own IT System Integration business experience, you would be looking at the issues below, just to name a few:

- business model (retail, wholesale, products or services)
- business name (brainstorm for a relevant name)
- location (do I need walk in customers?)
- sales and marketing (how do I market? through advertisements, word of mouth, exhibitions?)
- accounts (who will keep my accounts and pay salaries?)
- human resources (who to employ and how to employ?)
- expected breakeven period (when do I start making money?)
- expected profit (what profit am I expecting in the long-term?)

You would be take the business very SERIOUSLY!  You would prepare to work very hard, even sacrificing your weekends and Public Holidays,  for perhaps the next 1 year or even longer, before your business takes off and becomes profitable.  In other words, you will OPEN SHOP everyday!

In network marketing, many people do NOT treat their business as a business.

Why do I say that?

That’s because they don’t plan like they do in a traditional business.  They have no goals, no strategies, no plans!

And worst still, they don’t take action!!  That means, they do NOT open shop much, definitely NOT everyday like they would in a traditional business…

Network marketing is a Word-Of-Mouth referral business.  It’s been around for more than 50 years!

So, to open shop everyday in network marketing simply means to share with someone everyday, be it your family, friends, business associates, etc.  However, many people, after joining a network marketing company, don’t do that.  They will share only if they feel like or when they happen to come across someone who’s interested.

Thus, it boils down to one thing - they do not take their network marketing business as a real business.  And no wonder, their business don’t grow fast enough…and after a few short weeks or months, they’ll proclaim that this business cannot work :-)

Why so?  Frankly, I believe that there are many factors that have to do with human psychology.  But one reason I can think of is that because they start with such a small sum of money like a hundred dollars in most opportunities, they can afford to lose it and therefore do not take their business seriously.

And guess what?  These same people will move on to the next great opportunity as soon as it appears on the scene!  Soon, these network marketing or MLM junkies will soon ruin their own credibility and reputation in their own circle of friends and contacts.  Plus, each time they move to the next opportunity which they think it’s their “magic” pill, they are indeed uprooting all they have planted and then planting a new seed once again.

When you treat your network marketing business seriously, your business will surely grow over time!  That’s the universal law of sowing and reaping.

Why Madonna Earns More Than You

August 6th, 2006

Copyright (C) Adam Khoo

Let me pose you this question. Between a pop star like Madonna and a heart surgeon, who creates greater value in a person’s life?

Of course it is the heart surgeon! The heart surgeon has the ability to save a person’s life whereas Madonna can only make a person feel good for a couple of minutes.

Why then is Madonna paid 100,000 times more than a heart surgeon? What does Madonna have that the typical heart surgeon does not have? The answer is the ’scalability factor.’

The scalability factor is the final and most powerful component of the income formula. It is what separates the rich from the super rich.

The scalability factor is the extent to which you can MAGNIFY or MULTIPLY the effects of your value. It is the extent to which you can leverage your value & time.

The Power of Magnifying Value

For example, for three hours work, how many lives can the heart surgeon save? He can probably only save one life. He creates tremendous value, charging probably $20,000, but he can only touch one life.

In that same 3 hours of performing in a concert, how many people does Madonna’s singing benefit? Thousands and if it is broadcast live, maybe even millions.

So the value she creates is magnified tremendously whereas the surgeon does not have the power of magnification.

The Power of Multiplying Value

If Madonna were to spend three hours singing a series of songs in a studio and in were to be recorded on a CD, how many times would she get paid for it?

The answer is multiple times. Every time that CD is sold, she would earn a percentage of money, called a royalty.

If that CD album sold a million copies a year, she would get paid $5 million over and over again every year. In this case her value of singing is multiplied many fold!

As for the heart surgeon, he would be paid only once for the operation. Must you keep paying him royalties every year in order to keep your new heart?

Of course not! As a result, he does not experience any multiplication effect at all.

So, as you can see, a person’s income can massively increase when multiplied by the power of scalability.

INCOME = VALUE X TIME X SCALABILITY

Many people have the perception that you can only achieve scalability when you are singer, movie star, sports star or a famous celebrity. Absolutely not!

You can achieve massive magnification or multiplication in any profession, whether you are a chef, garbage collector, lawyer, doctor, teacher or software programmer.

When you fully utilize the power of (value x time x scalability), your wealth will grow exponentially!

So start keeping track of how you send your time each ay and focus more of your time on high value creation activities and your income will increase.

Winning Your Prospect Through Effective Follow-up

July 29th, 2006

Copyright (C) Lois R. Thompson

Follow-up! Follow-up! Follow-up! and Follow-up again.

Here online people are most reluctant to just jump in and buy your offer first time around. They need to Know that you have their best interest in mind and not simply your own. Research shows that the Key to the sale is in the follow-up.

Here are a few ways to provide effective, sale closing follow-up:

* A good Autoresponder which allows for 7-10 follow-ups…highlighting whats in it for them’. Your prospects need to see the benefits to Them!
* A Sales Letter with a call to action, but of passion and a genuine interest in the prospects success.
* Established credibility with you. This can be through a ezine/newsletter or just frequent updated offering information of value.
* Availability and timely response to their inquires.
* Expression of a genuine interest in them and their success.
* Honesty!

It is reported that many people who join and become successful in an MLM opportunity do so, not because of the opportunity itself, but because of having faith in the person presenting the opportunity.

So, how do you demonstrate having faith in your prospects? By being genuinely concerned about the success…by going the extra mile to assist in their success. By showing that your primary concern is in helping them to succeed, opposed to how having them in your group can help you to succeed.

Prospects are looking for givers, not takers. They are looking for someone trustworthy to help them to succeed.  It all begins with your first contact and through the follow-up.

So let’s give first and it will be given.
